Why doesn't pHin show the numbers?

​Our goal has always been to simplify pool care. As we develop pHin we are learning how to guide customers to care for their water without complicating the experience.

What can pHin Measure?


Your Monitor contains a number of electronic sensors. Each sensor converts a chemical measurement into an electronic measurement. In the current model of phin, these sensors measure pH, sanitation potential and temperature. Your pHin Calibration Kit includes test strips for measuring additional chemical properties: Total Alkalinity, Total Hardness, and CYA, as well as calibration for pH and sanitizer.
 

Where are my exact pH numbers?


When we began building pHin, we noticed that an electronic meter is much more sensitive than test strips or drip tests, so electronic pH measurements need to be averaged over time. As we tune our data model we will begin sharing these averages in the app. Still, our pH reading will likely vary from one you make yourself, or one performed at the pool shop. This shouldn’t be a problem as pHin learns to care for your pool and our data model evolves.
 

Where are my Chlorine/Bromine numbers?


Electronic sensors cannot directly measure chlorine or bromine concentrations. Instead, they measure a more important number, the Oxidation-Reduction Potential of your water. Oxidation is the process that destroys micro-organisms, and measuring this number directly will provide a more accurate assessment of your water’s safety. Many government water-safety guidelines are being re-written to use ORP. 

ORP is measured in millivolts (mv), and cannot be converted directly to the parts-per-million of Chlorine or Bromine. ORP is also dependent on many factors such as: pH, temperature, TDS, and CYA. Therefore, the measurement from the pHin Monitor must first be run through our Chemical Engine before we make recommendations.

What we show in the app is the resulting water condition: blue indicates balanced, orange indicates that the water needs immediate correction to restore balance, and red indicates that the water has become unbalanced enough to be unhealthy or dangerous. For example, a pool with an ORP of 600 mv would normally read blue, 300 may be orange or blue depending on the pool, and an ORP of 250 would be orange or red.


Where are my test strip/calibration strip readings?

You can find your test strip/calibration strip readings in the water report section of the App. Navigate into your Pool or Hot Tub details and tap the "Water Report" button.
